Daily Reflection: Psalm 70:5

“Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven." Matthew 5:3

Reflection: David’s prayer in Psalm 70 is evidently prompted by a life-threatening situation (v2). We too, can be quick to turn to God when we face sickness, difficulties and trials. But perhaps a greater challenge for us is to keep recognising our spiritual poverty and need for the Lord’s deliverance at other times. Competence, self-sufficiency, resourcefulness, material wealth, and a comfortable life can all numb us to our need for God’s mercy and salvation. When are you tempted to ‘go it alone’ without God in your life?

Prayer: Dear God, our creator and sustainer, help us to turn away from our self-reliance and instead rely on you for everything we need each day. Remind us especially of our need for your forgiveness and grace, and help us to be thankful that you offer this freely in the death and resurrection of your son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

Take it further: Read Psalm 70. Spend some time reflecting on verses 4 and 5, rejoicing and giving thanks to the Lord for his work in your life, as well as handing over to the Lord the areas of your life where you need help and deliverance.
