5 minutes with Lucy

Tell us a little about yourself My name is Lucy. I am recently married to a wonderful man named Sebastian. I love spending time with Bas, I love how we encourage each other in our walk with Jesus. I love being efficient and organised and do that 4 days a week as the missions administrator for Scripture Union NSW. What's your favourite bible passage & why? Romans 8:38-39 This world offers so many uncertainties and I love how certain we can be of the love of God that is in Jesus. How do you keep your eyes fixed on Jesus? I'm in constant conversation with him everyday. My relationship shapes everything I do and say and the desicions I make - that in and of itself keeps me grounded.

Raising Boys II Men

There is a lot of anxiety these days about gender identity and raising boys secure in their masculinity. To be honest, I’m much more worried about raising up men – or rather, human beings who are being transformed into Christ like maturity. This isn’t an abstract worry for me. I’m the mother of two boys, one about to enter his teens. My heart is troubled as I think about our boys. Not because I share the fears of those who think boys are being sidelined. It still seems to me very much a man’s world. But because when we look at the statistics of male violence towards women, we realise it isn’t a few bad apples. It is so widespread that abusive behaviour towards women is normalised. The correl

Fighting Words

I’ve been blessed recently by Ellie Holcomb’s “Fighting Words”. It’s an anthem that calls us to pick up the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God and to fix our eyes on Jesus. It inspires this first reflection on an episode in my life where I needed fighting words. As a cross-cultural worker in Central Asia, I was no stranger to talk of battles and fighting. I was of course keen to avoid the fighting that comes from living in a warzone but was realistic enough to know that the risks could only be minimised, not negated. There was no avoiding the risk of kidnapping or being collateral damage in a rocket attack, suicide explosion, or a military intervention. I’ll always remember my two teammat

Christianity and the Credibility of Women’s Testimony

My day ended as it had began: thinking about the credibility of women’s testimony in the Church. As a lecturer for the School of Theology for Charles Sturt University, my morning class examined the critical role of eyewitness testimony in the story of Jesus Christ. The surprising role of women recorded as the first witnesses of Jesus’ resurrection remains one of the more remarkable features of the origins of Christianity. As an ordained minister at Paddington Anglican Church, that evening I watched the harrowing testimony of several women who had suffered domestic violence and abuse within the church on the ABC’s 7:30 Report. I noticed my own response as I listened to their testimony: the

Tell us a little about yourself. I’m a passionate pioneer, married to Brian and have three amazing kids. My husband and I love starting new businesses or other new and exciting ventures. For a long time its 1 Timothy 4:12 “Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.” I grew up in ministry, starting my first paid role at 18yrs and was often the youngest in my field. I decided to let t

Five ways to stop over-thinking everything

I've been an over-thinker for as long as I could – well – think. My brain is often whirring, whirring... full of possibilities, problems, what-ifs, and worst-case scenarios. You'll often find me weighing up pros and cons, highs and lows, analysing 'life' from a subjective – then an objective – perspective – and writing lists of ways to tackle everything from the housework to my current relationship crisis. My brain just won't stop taking trips to different destinations – and those places aren't always postcard-pretty. Call it brilliance (ha!) – or label it anxiety... either way, I've needed to find ways to slow this pesky thought train down. Sometimes over-thinking can be exciting, productiv

What does shaving your legs have to do with Jesus?

I was a young teenager when I first shaved my legs. I was the last of my friends to do it, and it felt like a rite of passage. Grown up women were hairy, grown up women shaved their legs. It didn’t occur to me to ask what Jesus thought of shaving your legs. When I got married I remember asking my husband what he preferred. He’d made some comment about armpit hair that my sisters had teased him mercilessly about, but he was a bit befuddled by my question: adult women have hair on their legs, he said, it’s nothing to be ashamed about. But I considered my leg hair unfeminine, so I kept shaving it. Then I moved to Tanzania, where body hair is given much less attention, and clothes cover more of

Tell us a little about you I am a counsellor specialising in complex trauma and a senior lecturer in a Postgraduate School of Counselling in Sydney. I have a teaching background, both in primary and middle school. My husband thinks its funny that I began my working life teaching kindergarten and have now been promoted to teaching adults in my ‘older’ age. I have been involved in numerous short term mission trips to South East Asia, often taking a team of young people with me. My particular interest has been in working alongside those who rescue child soldiers, both in training those who care for them and counselling anyone who has need whilst I am visiting. This has led to thinking through h
